How OPatch Download Latest Version

Before Downloading OPatch

If you're the first time to apply patches, you have to add OPatch to $PATH in order to apply your patches anywhere. If you have done it, you can skip this step.

[oracle@test ~]$ vi .bash_profile
[oracle@test ~]$ . .bash_profile
[oracle@test ~]$ which opatch

Download Latest OPatch

Before any patching, you have to make sure your OPatch utility is the latest version in order to apply your patches more smoothly.

You should select the right OUI release and platform to download for your requirements and upload it to the database server.

Replace Old OPatch

Suppose you have upload the newest opatch zip file to /home/oracle/patches. Here are the steps that can replace current OPatch.

1. Check Version of Old OPatch

[oracle@test ~]$ opatch version
OPatch Version:

OPatch succeeded.

2. Rename Old OPatch

That is, move the old OPatch to step aside.

[oracle@test ~]$ mv $ORACLE_HOME/OPatch $ORACLE_HOME/OPatch-

With the version number, we can tell the directory is the old opatch utility in practice.

3. Unzip the New OPatch

We start to unzip it.

[oracle@test ~]$ unzip -q /home/oracle/patches/ -d $ORACLE_HOME

Option -q calls unzip in silent mode.

4. Check Version of New OPatch

[oracle@test ~]$ opatch version
OPatch Version:

OPatch succeeded.

Now, the OPatch version is

That is to say, updating OPatch can be simplified as two steps:

  1. Unzipping the new OPatch.
  2. Replace the old one.
